Description

Armenian Yard-Long Cucumber is a unique heirloom cucumber relative prized for its exceptionally long, slender, pale-green fruits and crisp, mild flavor. Despite its name, it is botanically a type of melon rather than a true cucumber. The fruits have thin, tender skin and are best harvested young when they are crisp and juicy. They are excellent for fresh salads, sandwiches, pickling, chilled dishes, and everyday cooking. The vigorous vines are highly productive and benefit from strong trellising.

When to Plant in the UAE

  • Early September: Direct sow outdoors as temperatures begin to moderate after the summer heat.
  • Early March: Direct sow outdoors for the spring growing season before temperatures become excessively hot.
  • Avoid: Peak summer planting, as extreme heat can reduce flowering, fruit set, and overall productivity.

Planting & Care Tips

  • Light & Soil: Grow in full sun in fertile, loose, well-draining soil enriched with compost and organic matter.
  • Depth & Germination: Sow seeds 2–3 cm deep. Germination typically occurs within 5–10 days in warm soil.
  • Spacing: Space plants 45–60 cm apart, with 90–120 cm between rows.
  • Support: Provide a strong trellis at least 1.8–2 m tall. Trellising keeps the long fruits clean, improves airflow, and makes harvesting easier.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during flowering and fruit development. Avoid irregular watering, which can contribute to poor fruit development and bitterness.
  • Feeding: Add compost before planting and feed with a balanced vegetable fertilizer every 3–4 weeks during active growth.
  • Harvest: Fruits are typically ready approximately 60–75 days after sowing. Harvest when young and tender, ideally before the fruits become overly large.
  • Harvesting Tips: Pick fruits regularly, preferably every 1–2 days once production begins. Use a sharp knife or pruners to cut the fruit from the vine without damaging the plant.
