Description

Black Tip Wheat is a striking open-pollinated durum wheat variety prized for its distinctive black to deep-purple awns and pale wheat heads. The plants grow tall and upright, adding excellent texture and contrast to the garden. The mature seed heads are especially popular for fresh and dried flower arrangements, wreaths, and natural decorations. The grain can also be harvested and ground into flour, particularly for pasta and other durum-wheat products. This easy-to-grow annual performs well in the UAE during the cooler growing season.

When to Plant in the UAE

  • Outdoors: Direct sow seeds from October through December.
  • Avoid: Peak summer planting, as wheat performs best during the cooler growing season.

Planting & Care Tips

  • Light & Soil: Grow in full sun in dry, well-draining soil. Avoid heavy clay or poorly drained areas.
  • Depth & Germination: Sow seeds approximately 0.5–1 cm deep. Germination typically occurs within 5–10 days under suitable conditions.
  • Spacing: Space plants approximately 2.5–5 cm apart for dense stands, or broadcast sow for larger plantings.
  • Watering: Keep the soil lightly moist during germination and early growth. Once established, avoid excessive irrigation and allow the soil to dry slightly between watering.
  • Feeding: Add compost before planting. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage overly lush growth and increase the risk of weak stems.
  • Harvest: Black Tip Wheat matures in approximately 75–80 days. For ornamental use, harvest when the seed heads are mature and the dark awns have developed their characteristic color.
  • Harvesting Tips: Cut stems when the heads are developed but before they become overly dry. For dried arrangements, bundle the stems and hang them upside down in a dry, well-ventilated location.
