Description

Antigua Bean is a productive heirloom variety known for its vigorous climbing habit and long, tender green pods. The slender pods have a mild, fresh flavor and crisp texture, making them excellent for stir-fries, steaming, sautéing, curries, salads, and fresh cooking. This warm-season bean produces abundant harvests when provided with adequate sunlight, water, and climbing support, making it well suited to the UAE’s warm growing conditions.

When to Plant in the UAE

  • Outdoors: Direct sow seeds in early September and again in early March for the best results.

Planting & Care Tips

  • Light & Soil: Plant in full sun in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost.
  • Depth & Germination: Sow seeds 2–3 cm deep. Germination typically occurs within 5–10 days in warm soil.
  • Spacing: Space plants 20–30 cm apart, with 60–90 cm between rows.
  • Support: Provide a strong trellis or climbing support at least 1.8–2 m tall to support the vigorous vines.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during flowering and pod development, while avoiding waterlogged conditions.
  • Feeding: Apply compost before planting. Avoid excessive nitrogen, as it can encourage leafy growth at the expense of pod production.
  • Harvest: Pods are ready to harvest approximately 55–70 days after sowing, when they are young, tender, and crisp.
  • Harvesting Tips: Harvest pods every 2–3 days to encourage continuous flowering and production. Use clean scissors or pruners to avoid damaging the vines.
