Description
Amana Orange is a breathtaking heirloom beefsteak tomato known for its giant, often 1–2 lb (500g–900g) fluted fruits with radiant orange skin and exceptionally juicy, intensely sweet, tropical-tasting flesh. It grows on indeterminate vines that can reach 1.5–2 m tall and continues to yield through the season.
When to Plant in the UAE
Start Indoors: Sow seeds early to mid-August, keeping soil temperature at or above 24 °C to ensure consistent germination.
Transplant Outdoors: Move seedlings outdoors in early October, when nighttime temperatures remain above 15 °C—ideal to avoid both summer heat and cooler periods.
Direct Sowing: If the soil is warm and well-prepared, you may also sow seeds directly outdoors in early October.
This timing works well with the UAE’s fall-winter growing window, giving plants excellent establishment and yield conditions.
Growing Timeline
Expect to start harvesting approximately 80 to 90 days after transplanting.
Planting & Care Tips
Sun & Soil: Choose a sunny location (6–8 hrs/day) with fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic compost.
Depth & Support: Plant seedlings deeply—burying to the first true leaves—to foster strong root systems. Use sturdy cages or stakes to support the tall, heavy vines.
Spacing: Maintain 45–60 cm between plants and 90 cm between rows to ensure healthy airflow.
Watering: Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Mulch helps retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer at planting; once fruiting begins, shift to formulas richer in phosphorus and potassium to boost yield.
Harvesting: Pick tomatoes when the color is fully vibrant orange and the fruit yields slightly to gentle pressure. Frequent harvesting encourages continued fruiting.
