Description
Habanero orange peppers (Capsicum chinense) are renowned for their vibrant heat and fruity, floral flavor. They register a scorching 100,000–350,000 Scoville Heat Units, making them a staple for spicy sauces and adventurous cooks. Habaneros thrive in tropical or subtropical climates and perform well in containers or borders if given warm, sunny conditions.
When to Plant in the UAE (Field Planting & Indoor Start)
Stage | Timing in UAE | Temperature Notes |
---|---|---|
Indoor Sowing | Mid-July | Soil ≥ 24 °C |
Field Transplant | Mid-October | Night temps ≥ 13–18 °C |
Start Indoors: Begin seeds in mid-July, about 8–10 weeks before transplanting. Use a warm seed-start mix at a minimum soil temperature of 24 °C for good germination.
Transplant Outdoors: Move seedlings to the field in mid-October, when nighttime temperatures consistently stay above 13 °C and close enough to the preferred warm range for peppers.
Tips for Planting & Care
Light & Soil: Provide full sun (at least 6 hours daily) in fertile, well-draining soil with a pH between 6.0–6.8.
Depth & Spacing: Plant seeds about 0.6 cm deep; space transplants 35–45 cm apart, with 60–90 cm between rows.
Watering: Keep soil evenly moist, especially during flowering and fruiting—but avoid soggy conditions which can impair flavor potency.
Fertilization: Use a balanced fertilizer early, then shift to higher phosphorus and potassium ratios to promote blooms and fruit over foliage. Growing Season: Expect a long growing period of about 100 days from transplanting to harvest.
Harvest: Pick fully colored fruits (orange for this variety) about 80 days after flowering, using scissors or gentle twisting to preserve the plant.
