Description
Hill Country Red Okra is a beautiful heirloom variety prized for its striking deep red pods, vigorous growth, and excellent productivity. The tender pods typically grow 10–15 cm long and have a mild, rich flavor that is perfect for stews, soups, curries, stir-fries, grilling, and pickling. The attractive red pods turn green when cooked but retain their delicious taste and tender texture. This heat-loving variety thrives in warm climates and performs exceptionally well in the UAE.
When to Plant in the UAE
- Outdoors: Direct sow seeds in early March and again in early September for the best harvests.
- Successive Planting: Sow every 2–3 weeks during each planting season for a continuous harvest.
Planting & Care Tips
- Light & Soil: Plant in full sun in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost.
- Depth & Germination: Sow seeds 2–3 cm deep. Germination typically occurs within 5–10 days in warm soil.
- Spacing: Space plants 30–45 cm apart, with 75–90 cm between rows.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist during establishment, then water deeply and regularly during flowering and pod production while avoiding waterlogged conditions.
- Feeding: Apply compost before planting and feed with a balanced fertilizer every 3–4 weeks. Increase potassium during flowering to encourage abundant pod production.
- Harvest: Harvest pods in approximately 55–65 days, when they are 7–10 cm long, tender, and deep red.
- Harvesting Tips: Harvest pods every 2–3 days using clean pruners or a sharp knife to encourage continuous production and prevent pods from becoming tough.
