Black Diamond Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) is a classic heirloom watermelon known for its large size, dark green to nearly black skin, and sweet, juicy red flesh. The fruits can grow very large under good growing conditions, making this variety a striking addition to the home garden.

The crisp, refreshing flesh is excellent for fresh eating and summer drinks. The vigorous vines require plenty of space to spread and perform best in warm conditions with consistent moisture.

Planting & Care Tips

• Sow seeds directly about 2–3 cm deep in fertile, well-drained soil.
• Germination usually takes around 5–10 days in warm conditions.
• Space plants approximately 90–120 cm apart, with additional room for trailing vines.
• Grow in full sun.
• Enrich the soil with plenty of compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.
• Keep soil consistently moist, especially during flowering and fruit development.
• Feed with a balanced fertilizer during early growth, then provide adequate potassium during fruit development.
• Allow vines to spread naturally or guide them along the edge of the growing area.
• Reduce watering as the fruit approaches maturity to help concentrate sweetness.
• Harvest when the fruit develops a duller skin, the tendril nearest the fruit dries, and the underside develops a creamy yellow color.
