Description
Description
Common Arugula (Eruca sativa) is a fast-growing leafy green prized for its peppery, slightly nutty flavor. Its tender green leaves are excellent for fresh salads, sandwiches, wraps, pizzas and pesto. It grows quickly and can be harvested young for a milder flavor or allowed to mature for a stronger, more peppery taste. An excellent cool-season crop for home gardens and containers.
When to Plant in the UAE
- Direct sow outdoors: Late September–December
- Succession sow every 2–3 weeks for a continuous harvest.
Planting & Care Tips
- Sow seeds about 0.5–1 cm deep in fertile, well-drained soil.
- Germination usually takes 4–8 days.
- Space plants 10–15 cm apart, with 20–30 cm between rows.
- Grow in full sun to partial shade.
- Keep the soil consistently moist for tender, mild leaves.
- Harvest young leaves when they reach about 5–10 cm for the best flavor.
- Succession planting helps maintain a steady supply throughout the cool season.
- Avoid excessive heat, which can cause the plant to bolt and develop a stronger flavor.
