Description
Orange Sherbert Carnation is a beautiful heirloom flowering variety prized for its vibrant orange blooms, ruffled petals, and sweet, spicy fragrance. The long-lasting flowers make an excellent choice for borders, containers, cottage gardens, cut flowers, and decorative arrangements. Carnations are also attractive to pollinators and add color and fragrance to the garden during the cooler growing season in the UAE.
When to Plant in the UAE
- Outdoors: Direct sow seeds in October.
Planting & Care Tips
- Light & Soil: Grow in full sun in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost. Good drainage is essential.
- Depth & Germination: Sow seeds 0.5 cm deep or lightly cover with a thin layer of soil. Germination typically occurs within 7–14 days.
- Spacing: Space plants 20–30 cm apart, with 30–40 cm between rows.
- Watering: Keep the soil lightly moist during germination and establishment. Once established, water regularly while allowing the surface of the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
- Feeding: Add compost before planting and apply a balanced flower fertilizer every 3–4 weeks during active growth.
- Pinching: Pinch young growing tips to encourage branching and produce fuller plants with more flower stems.
- Flowering: Plants typically begin flowering approximately 90–120 days after sowing, depending on growing conditions.
- Harvesting Tips: For cut flowers, harvest stems when the buds are showing color but have not fully opened. Remove spent flowers regularly to encourage continued blooming.
