Description
Bull’s Blood Beet is a classic heirloom variety prized for its deep burgundy leaves and sweet, dark red roots. The young leaves are tender and flavorful, making them perfect for salads and microgreens, while the mature roots are excellent for roasting, boiling, pickling, and juicing. This dual-purpose variety is fast-growing, highly productive, and thrives during the UAE’s cool growing season.
When to Plant in the UAE
- Direct Sow: Sow seeds from October through February, when temperatures are cool.
- Successive Planting: Sow every 2–3 weeks throughout the season for a continuous harvest.
Planting & Care Tips
- Light & Soil: Grow in full sun to partial shade in fertile, well-draining soil rich in organic matter.
- Depth & Germination: Sow seeds 1–2 cm deep. Germination typically occurs within 5–10 days.
- Spacing: Space plants 10–15 cm apart, with 30–40 cm between rows. Thin seedlings as needed to allow proper root development.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged to encourage tender roots and healthy foliage.
- Feeding: Mix compost into the soil before planting and apply a balanced fertilizer every 3–4 weeks for vigorous growth.
- Harvest: Baby leaves can be harvested in 25–30 days, while roots are ready in 55–70 days.
- Harvesting Tips: Harvest leaves regularly without removing more than one-third of the plant at a time, or pull the entire plant once the roots reach the desired size.
