Description
Description
Lemongrass is a fragrant perennial herb prized for its tall, grass-like leaves and distinctive fresh citrus aroma. The tender lower stalks have a bright lemony flavor and are widely used in Asian cooking, curries, soups, stir-fries, teas, marinades, and herbal preparations. Lemongrass forms dense clumps and is also an attractive, low-maintenance addition to herb gardens and containers. It thrives in warm conditions and performs well in the UAE when grown during the warmer parts of the year.
When to Plant in the UAE
- Early September: Plant outdoors as temperatures begin to moderate after the summer heat.
- Early March: Plant outdoors for the spring growing season before temperatures become excessively hot.
- Avoid: Peak summer planting, as extreme heat can stress young plants and make establishment more difficult.
Planting & Care Tips
- Light & Soil: Grow in full sun in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost and organic matter.
- Planting Depth: Plant rooted divisions or young plants with the base of the stalk just below the soil surface. If starting from seed, sow 0.5–1 cm deep.
- Spacing: Space plants 60–90 cm apart to allow the clumps to expand.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist during establishment and active growth. Once established, lemongrass can tolerate short periods of dryness but grows best with regular moisture.
- Feeding: Add compost before planting and feed with a balanced organic fertilizer every 4–6 weeks during active growth.
- Maintenance: Remove dry or damaged leaves regularly. Divide large clumps every few years to maintain vigorous growth and produce new plants.
- Harvest: Begin harvesting stalks once plants are well established and have formed strong clumps, usually several months after planting.
- Harvesting Tips: Cut outer stalks at the base when they reach a suitable thickness. Leave the younger central stalks so the plant can continue producing new growth.
