Description
Red Pear Tomato is a classic heirloom variety known for its distinctive pear-shaped fruits, bright red color, and rich, sweet tomato flavor. The medium-sized fruits have a juicy, meaty texture and are excellent for fresh eating, salads, sandwiches, sauces, roasting, and preserving. The vigorous indeterminate plants produce abundant clusters of fruit over a long growing season and benefit from strong support. This productive heirloom is an excellent choice for home gardens, raised beds, and container growing with adequate support.
When to Plant in the UAE
- Indoors: Start seeds indoors in August.
- Outdoors: Transplant seedlings in early October, when temperatures begin to cool.
- Avoid: Peak summer heat, as extreme temperatures can interfere with flowering, fruit set, and overall plant growth.
Planting & Care Tips
- Light & Soil: Grow in full sun in fertile, loose, well-draining soil enriched with compost and organic matter.
- Depth & Germination: Sow seeds approximately 0.5–1 cm deep. Germination typically occurs within 5–10 days under warm conditions.
- Spacing: Space plants 60–75 cm apart, with 90–120 cm between rows.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist during establishment, flowering, and fruit development. Avoid irregular watering and waterlogged conditions.
- Feeding: Add compost before planting and apply a balanced organic tomato fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during active growth. Increase potassium during flowering and fruiting to support healthy fruit development.
- Support: Provide strong stakes, cages, or trellises. The indeterminate vines can become tall and heavily loaded with fruit.
- Pruning: Remove lower leaves and selected suckers as needed to improve airflow and keep the plant manageable.
- Harvest: Fruits are generally ready approximately 75–85 days after transplanting. Harvest when they develop their full red color and feel slightly soft.
- Harvesting Tips: Pick fruits carefully using clean pruners or scissors. Regular harvesting encourages continued production.
