Description

Echinacea purpurea—commonly known as Purple Coneflower—is a striking, drought-tolerant perennial that earns its place in prairies, meadows, and sunny garden beds. It features tall, stout stems (60–120 cm) topped with large, daisy-like blooms of pink to purple petals fanning out from prominent brownish-orange cones. These long-lasting flowers are beloved by bees, butterflies, and birds, and make excellent cut and dried arrangements. Once established, the plant is heat and drought-resistant, deer-resistant, and self-seeds freely.

When to Plant in the UAE

  • Direct Sowing: Ideal from September, when temperatures begin to moderate but stay warm enough (about 25–35 °C) to support germination and early growth.

  • Indoor Transplant Option: Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before planting (i.e., late July–August). Transplant outdoors in September, once night temperatures remain above 15 °C.

Planting & Care Tips

TaskRecommendation
Sun & SoilFull sun (6+ hrs/day) in well-draining soil—neutral to slightly acidic. Incorporate compost for fertility.
Sowing DepthSow seeds ~0.5 cm deep. Germination occurs in 10–20 days with soil temps around 20-28 °C
SpacingThin or transplant seedlings to 45–60 cm apart to allow airflow and garden-style silhouette.
WateringKeep soil evenly moist during establishment. Once established, reduce watering—this perennial is drought-tolerant.
MaintenanceDeadhead faded flowers to encourage long-lasting blooms. Clumps may be divided every 3–4 years in spring or fall for vigor.
ResistanceHighly resistant to heat, drought, deer, and many pests. Pollinator-friendly and long-blooming in UAE-like conditions.
