Description

Echinacea Purple Coneflower is a beautiful, resilient perennial known for its large daisy-like flowers with vibrant purple-pink petals surrounding a distinctive raised orange-brown cone. The upright plants add height and structure to flower beds, borders, cottage gardens, and pollinator gardens. Echinacea is highly attractive to bees and butterflies, while mature seed heads can provide food for birds. The long-lasting blooms are also excellent for cut-flower arrangements. Once established, Purple Coneflower is relatively drought tolerant and can return year after year in suitable conditions.

When to Plant in the UAE

  • Outdoors: Direct sow seeds throughout October.
  • Best results: Plant during the cooler growing season in full sun and well-draining soil.
  • Avoid: Peak summer heat, as extreme temperatures can make germination and establishment difficult and stress young plants.

Planting & Care Tips

  • Light & Soil: Grow in full sun in fertile, well-draining soil. Echinacea prefers soil that does not remain excessively wet.
  • Depth & Germination: Sow seeds approximately 0.3–0.5 cm deep and cover lightly with soil. Germination typically takes 10–21 days under suitable conditions.
  • Spacing: Space plants approximately 30–45 cm apart, with 45–60 cm between rows.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist during germination and early establishment. Once established, water deeply but allow the soil to dry slightly between watering.
  • Feeding: Add compost before planting. Avoid excessive fertilizer, as overly rich soil can encourage weak, leafy growth.
  • Flowering: Echinacea may take longer to flower when grown from seed, with stronger flowering usually developing after the plant becomes established.
  • Deadheading: Remove spent flowers to encourage additional blooms, or leave some seed heads for birds and natural reseeding.
  • Pollinators: The flowers are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects.
  • Maintenance: Provide good air circulation and avoid consistently wet soil. Established plants can return for multiple seasons in suitable conditions.
