Description

Big Jim Pepper is a popular heirloom-type chile pepper known for its exceptionally long, thick fruits and mild to medium heat. The large green peppers have a slightly sweet, rich flavor and can mature to a deep red when left on the plant. They are excellent for roasting, grilling, stuffing, frying, fresh salsas, sauces, and pickling. Big Jim plants are productive and vigorous, making them a great choice for home gardens and raised beds. This warm-season pepper performs well in the UAE when grown during the milder growing periods.

When to Plant in the UAE

  • Indoors: Start seeds indoors in July.
  • Outdoors: Transplant seedlings or direct sow from October through March, when temperatures are warm.
  • Avoid: Peak summer planting, as extreme heat can reduce germination, flowering, fruit set, and overall plant growth.

Planting & Care Tips

  • Light & Soil: Grow in full sun in fertile, loose, well-draining soil enriched with compost and organic matter.
  • Depth & Germination: Sow seeds 0.5–1 cm deep. Germination typically occurs within 7–14 days under warm conditions.
  • Spacing: Space plants 45–60 cm apart, with 60–75 cm between rows.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist during establishment, flowering, and fruit development. Avoid both prolonged dryness and waterlogged conditions.
  • Feeding: Add compost before planting and apply a balanced organic fertilizer every 3–4 weeks during active growth. Increase potassium during flowering and fruiting to support healthy fruit production.
  • Support: Provide light staking if needed, especially when plants are carrying many large peppers.
  • Harvest: Peppers can be harvested green when young and tender or left on the plant to mature to red for a sweeter, deeper flavor.
  • Harvesting Tips: Use clean scissors or pruners to cut peppers from the plant rather than pulling them, helping prevent damage to the branches.
