Description
Description
Oriental Yard Long Bean is a productive heirloom variety prized for its exceptionally long, slender pods that can reach 45–60 cm in length. The tender green pods have a mild, slightly sweet flavor and crisp texture, making them excellent for stir-fries, steaming, sautéing, curries, salads, and fresh cooking. This vigorous climbing variety thrives in warm weather, produces abundant harvests, and performs particularly well in the UAE.
When to Plant in the UAE
- Outdoors: Direct sow seeds in early September and again in early March for the best results.
Planting & Care Tips
- Light & Soil: Plant in full sun in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost.
- Depth & Germination: Sow seeds 2–3 cm deep. Germination typically occurs within 5–10 days in warm soil.
- Spacing: Space plants 20–30 cm apart, with 60–90 cm between rows.
- Support: Provide a strong trellis or climbing support at least 1.8–2 m tall, as the vigorous vines can grow several meters long.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during flowering and pod development, while avoiding waterlogged conditions.
- Feeding: Apply compost before planting. Avoid excessive nitrogen, as it can encourage vigorous leaf growth at the expense of pod production.
- Harvest: Pods are ready to harvest approximately 60–80 days after sowing, preferably when they are young, tender, and about 30–45 cm long.
- Harvesting Tips: Harvest pods every 2–3 days to encourage continuous flowering and production. Use clean scissors or pruners to avoid damaging the vines.
