Description
Pacific Beauty Mix Calendula is a colorful heirloom flower mix producing cheerful blooms in shades of yellow, orange, cream, and apricot. The daisy-like flowers have edible petals and are excellent for salads, garnishes, herbal preparations, and natural decoration. Calendula is also a valuable companion plant that attracts bees and other beneficial insects, making it an excellent addition to vegetable gardens, borders, containers, and pollinator-friendly spaces. This easy-to-grow, cool-season annual performs very well in the UAE during the cooler months.
When to Plant in the UAE
- Outdoors: Direct sow seeds in October.
Planting & Care Tips
- Light & Soil: Grow in full sun to partial shade in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost. Calendula tolerates a range of soil types as long as drainage is good.
- Depth & Germination: Sow seeds 0.5–1 cm deep. Germination typically occurs within 7–14 days.
- Spacing: Space plants 20–30 cm apart, with 30–45 cm between rows.
- Watering: Keep the soil moderately moist during germination and establishment. Once established, water regularly but avoid overwatering.
- Feeding: Add compost before planting. Avoid excessive fertilizer, particularly nitrogen, as it can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers.
- Flowering: Plants typically begin flowering approximately 45–60 days after sowing and can continue producing flowers for an extended period under suitable conditions.
- Harvesting Tips: Pick flowers when they are fully open, preferably in the morning after the dew has dried. Regularly removing spent flowers encourages continued blooming.
- Companion Planting: Plant near vegetables and herbs to attract pollinators and beneficial insects.
