Description
Tam Jalapeño peppers are a mild Jalapeño variety (≈ 1,000–1,500 on the Scoville scale) developed by Texas A&M. They offer all the classic flavors of a jalapeño—crisp, fresh, and slightly sweet—without overwhelming heat. These plants are compact (approximately 90 cm tall) and highly productive, producing glossy 7–8 cm pods that transition from green to red when mature.
When to Plant in the UAE
Indoor Sowing: Begin around mid‑July, around 8–10 weeks before transplanting. Ensure the soil is warm (≥ 24 °C) for successful germination.
Outdoors: Transplant seedlings around mid‑October, when nighttime temperatures consistently stay above 13–15 °C, bypassing both extreme summer heat and colder periods.
Tips for Planting & Care
Light & Soil: Provide full sun and use well-draining, fertile soil enriched with compost.
Depth & Germination: Sow seeds about 0.6 cm deep. Expect germination within 10–14 days, but be patient—young seedlings grow slowly.
Spacing: Space plants 45 cm apart, with rows 90 cm apart to promote airflow and healthy growth.
Watering: Maintain even soil moisture, especially during flowering and fruit set; mulch helps retain moisture and reduce weeds.
Fertilizer: Apply a balanced fertilizer at planting and again when the first pods appear to boost yield.
Support: While generally sturdy, plants may benefit from light staking when heavily laden with fruit.
Growth Timeline: Plan for approximately 70–99 days from transplanting to harvest.
Harvesting: Harvest pods when they reach their mature red color for peak sweetness; use clean scissors or a knife to avoid stressing the plant.
