Description
Purple Tomatillo is a beautiful and productive Mexican heirloom-type crop known for its distinctive purple-skinned fruits and rich, slightly tart flavor. The small, round fruits develop inside papery husks and become increasingly purple as they mature. They are excellent for fresh salsa, green or purple sauces, guacamole, roasting, grilling, pickling, and a variety of Mexican and Southwestern dishes. Plants are vigorous and productive, making them a rewarding addition to home gardens and raised beds. For reliable fruit production, grow at least two plants to encourage cross-pollination.
When to Plant in the UAE
- Indoors: Start seeds indoors in July.
- Outdoors: Transplant seedlings from October through March, when temperatures are warm but not excessively hot.
- Avoid: Peak summer heat, as extreme temperatures can reduce flowering and fruit set.
Planting & Care Tips
- Light & Soil: Grow in full sun in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost and organic matter.
- Depth & Germination: Sow seeds approximately 0.5–1 cm deep. Germination typically occurs within 7–14 days under warm conditions.
- Spacing: Space plants 60–90 cm apart, with approximately 90–120 cm between rows.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist during establishment, flowering, and fruit development. Avoid waterlogged soil and prolonged dry periods.
- Feeding: Add compost before planting and use a balanced organic fertilizer during active growth. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage leafy growth at the expense of fruit production.
- Support: Plants can become large and sprawling. Provide a sturdy cage, trellis, or stakes to keep branches supported and fruit off the ground.
- Pollination: Grow at least two plants together to improve pollination and fruit set.
- Harvest: Fruits are ready when they have filled their papery husks and the husks begin to dry or split slightly. For deeper purple coloration, allow fruits to remain on the plant longer.
- Harvesting Tips: Pick fruits by hand or with clean scissors. Mature fruits can be used fresh or stored in their husks in a cool, dry place for short-term storage.
