Description
Self Blanching Cauliflower is a classic heirloom variety prized for its large, creamy white heads and naturally wrapping inner leaves that protect the curd from sunlight. This self-blanching habit helps maintain the head’s bright white color without the need to tie the leaves. It has a mild, sweet flavor and tender texture, making it ideal for roasting, steaming, soups, stir-fries, and fresh dishes. This productive variety thrives during the UAE’s cool growing season.
When to Plant in the UAE
- Indoors: Start seeds indoors in September.
- Outdoors: Transplant seedlings or direct sow in late October, when temperatures have cooled.
Planting & Care Tips
- Light & Soil: Grow in full sun in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost.
- Depth & Germination: Sow seeds 0.5–1 cm deep. Germination typically occurs within 5–10 days.
- Spacing: Space plants 45–60 cm apart, with 60–75 cm between rows.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist throughout the growing season, especially while the heads are developing. Avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely.
- Feeding: Apply compost before planting and feed with a balanced fertilizer every 3–4 weeks. Ensure adequate nitrogen during early growth to promote healthy foliage.
- Harvest: Harvest heads in approximately 75–90 days, when they are firm, compact, and before the florets begin to separate.
- Harvesting Tips: Cut the head with several surrounding leaves attached to protect it during handling and extend freshness.
