Description
Amana Orange Tomato is a beautiful heirloom variety known for its large, bright orange fruits and rich, sweet flavor. The fruits are typically meaty and juicy, with a smooth texture and relatively low acidity, making them excellent for fresh eating, salads, sandwiches, and slicing. Plants are vigorous and productive, making this variety a rewarding choice for home vegetable gardens and larger growing beds.
When to Plant in the UAE
- Indoors: Start seeds indoors in July–August.
- Outdoors: Transplant seedlings in October.
- Best results: Start seeds in a protected environment and transplant strong, healthy seedlings once temperatures become more suitable for tomato production.
- Avoid: Peak summer heat, which can interfere with flowering and fruit set.
Planting & Care Tips
- Light & Soil: Grow in full sun in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost and organic matter.
- Seed Starting: Sow seeds approximately 0.5–1 cm deep. Germination generally takes 5–10 days under warm, suitable conditions.
- Transplanting: Transplant outdoors in October when seedlings have several true leaves and are well established. Harden seedlings before transplanting.
- Spacing: Space plants approximately 45–60 cm apart, with 75–90 cm between rows.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently and evenly moist, particularly during flowering and fruit development. Avoid large fluctuations in moisture.
- Feeding: Add compost before planting and use a balanced tomato fertilizer during the growing season. Increase potassium and phosphorus support during flowering and fruiting if appropriate.
- Support: Provide a sturdy tomato cage, trellis, or stake as plants develop, as vigorous tomato plants can become heavy with fruit.
- Pruning: Remove lower leaves touching the soil and selectively prune excess growth if needed to improve airflow.
- Harvesting: Harvest when fruits develop their characteristic deep orange color and have a slight give when gently squeezed.
- Pollination: Gently shaking the plant or flower clusters can help release pollen and improve fruit set, especially when growing in sheltered conditions.
