Description
Dianthus Arctic Fire is a striking, compact flowering variety known for its bright white flowers with contrasting deep red to burgundy centers. The fringed petals give the blooms an elegant appearance, while the plants form neat, low-growing mounds of narrow blue-green foliage. The flowers have a pleasant fragrance and are excellent for borders, flower beds, containers, rock gardens, and cottage gardens. Arctic Fire is also attractive to bees and butterflies, making it a beautiful addition to pollinator-friendly gardens.
When to Plant in the UAE
- Outdoors: Direct sow seeds throughout November.
- Best results: Plant in full sun or partial shade in well-draining soil.
- Avoid: Peak summer heat, as high temperatures can reduce germination and stress young plants.
Planting & Care Tips
- Light & Soil: Grow in full sun to partial shade in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost and organic matter.
- Depth & Germination: Sow seeds approximately 0.3–0.5 cm deep and cover lightly with soil. Germination typically occurs within 7–14 days.
- Spacing: Space plants approximately 20–30 cm apart, with 30–45 cm between rows.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist during germination and early growth. Once established, water moderately and allow the soil surface to dry slightly between watering.
- Feeding: Add compost before planting. Apply a balanced organic fertilizer during active growth if needed, but avoid excessive nitrogen.
- Flowering: Plants generally begin flowering approximately 60–90 days after sowing, depending on growing conditions.
- Deadheading: Remove spent flowers regularly to encourage additional blooms and extend the flowering period.
- Pollinators: The fragrant flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects.
- Maintenance: Provide good air circulation and avoid excessive moisture around the foliage.
