Description
Description
Roselle, also known as Asian Sour Leaf or Hibiscus, is a versatile heirloom plant prized for its attractive red stems, deep green leaves, and tart, lemon-like flavor. The young leaves are commonly used as a souring ingredient in Asian and African cuisines, while the fleshy red calyces are widely used to make herbal teas, refreshing drinks, jams, jellies, sauces, and preserves. The attractive flowers also make Roselle an excellent addition to edible and pollinator-friendly gardens. This vigorous, heat-loving plant performs particularly well in the UAE’s warm growing conditions.
When to Plant in the UAE
- Outdoors: Direct sow seeds in early September and again in early March for the best results.
Planting & Care Tips
- Light & Soil: Plant in full sun in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost.
- Depth & Germination: Sow seeds 1–2 cm deep. Germination typically occurs within 7–14 days in warm soil.
- Spacing: Space plants 60–90 cm apart, with 90–120 cm between rows.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist during establishment and active growth, especially during flowering and calyx development, while avoiding waterlogged conditions.
- Feeding: Apply compost before planting and feed with a balanced fertilizer every 3–4 weeks during active growth. Avoid excessive nitrogen once flowering begins.
- Harvest: Young leaves can be harvested approximately 50–70 days after sowing. The red calyces are typically ready for harvest around 90–120 days after sowing, once they are fully developed and fleshy.
- Harvesting Tips: Harvest young leaves regularly for use as a souring green. Pick calyces soon after flowering when they are plump and brightly colored. Remove the seed pods from the calyces before using them for tea or cooking.
