Description

Coriander, also known as cilantro, is a fast-growing cool-season herb valued for its fresh, citrusy flavor and versatility in the kitchen. Both the tender green leaves and aromatic seeds are useful, making coriander a popular herb for Middle Eastern, Indian, Asian, and Mediterranean cooking. Fresh leaves are excellent in salads, sauces, chutneys, curries, soups, marinades, and garnishes, while the mature seeds can be dried and used as a flavorful spice. Coriander is easy to grow from seed and is well suited to raised beds, containers, herb gardens, and kitchen gardens in the UAE.

When to Plant in the UAE

  • Outdoors: Direct sow seeds from October through December.
  • Best results: Plant during the cooler months for lush foliage and slower bolting.
  • Avoid: Peak summer heat, as high temperatures can cause coriander to bolt quickly and reduce leaf production.

Planting & Care Tips

  • Light & Soil: Grow in full sun during the cooler months. Provide partial shade if temperatures begin to rise. Use fertile, loose, well-draining soil enriched with compost.
  • Depth & Germination: Sow seeds approximately 0.5–1 cm deep. Germination typically occurs within 7–14 days.
  • Spacing: Space plants 10–15 cm apart, with 20–30 cm between rows.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist during germination and early growth. Avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely.
  • Feeding: Add compost before planting. Apply a mild organic fertilizer during active growth if needed.
  • Harvesting Leaves: Begin harvesting young leaves approximately 3–4 weeks after sowing. Harvest the outer leaves first, allowing the center to continue growing.
  • Harvesting Seeds: Allow plants to flower and form seed heads. Harvest when the seeds turn light brown and begin to dry, then dry them completely before storing.
  • Succession Planting: Sow small batches every 2–3 weeks during the growing season for a continuous supply of fresh coriander.
