Description

Broad Leaf Sage is a classic heirloom herb prized for its large, soft, silvery-green leaves and rich, earthy aroma. Its bold, slightly peppery flavor makes it a favorite for seasoning meats, poultry, stuffing, roasted vegetables, soups, sauces, and herbal teas. This hardy perennial is also valued as an ornamental plant and for attracting beneficial pollinators. It thrives in warm, sunny conditions and performs well during the UAE’s cooler growing season.

When to Plant in the UAE

  • Indoors: Start seeds indoors in August.
  • Outdoors: Transplant seedlings or direct sow from October through December, when temperatures are mild.

Planting & Care Tips

  • Light & Soil: Plant in full sun in well-draining, sandy or loamy soil enriched with compost.
  • Depth & Germination: Sow seeds 0.5 cm deep. Germination typically occurs within 10–21 days.
  • Spacing: Space plants 40–50 cm apart, with 60–75 cm between rows.
  • Watering: Keep the soil lightly moist during germination and establishment. Once established, water deeply but allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
  • Feeding: Apply compost before planting. Sage requires only light feeding and performs best in moderately fertile soil.
  • Harvest: Begin harvesting leaves approximately 70–90 days after planting. Regular harvesting encourages bushier growth.
  • Harvesting Tips: Pick young leaves as needed or cut stems just above a leaf node. Avoid removing more than one-third of the plant at one time to maintain healthy growth.
