Description
Danvers 126 Carrot is a classic heirloom variety prized for its deep orange, tapered roots, crisp texture, and sweet, earthy flavor. The roots typically grow 15–20 cm long and develop well even in heavier soils compared with many other carrot varieties. They are excellent for fresh eating, salads, roasting, juicing, soups, stews, and cooking. This reliable, productive cool-season carrot is well suited to the UAE’s winter growing conditions.
When to Plant in the UAE
- Outdoors: Direct sow seeds in October.
Planting & Care Tips
- Light & Soil: Grow in full sun to partial shade in loose, fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost. Remove stones and break up compacted areas to encourage straight roots.
- Depth & Germination: Sow seeds 0.5–1 cm deep. Germination typically occurs within 7–14 days.
- Spacing: Thin seedlings to 5–8 cm apart, with 25–30 cm between rows.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist during germination and root development. Avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely.
- Feeding: Add compost before planting. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage leafy growth at the expense of root development.
- Harvest: Roots are typically ready approximately 65–75 days after sowing, when they reach the desired size and develop a strong orange color.
- Harvesting Tips: Harvest when roots are young to medium-sized for the best sweetness and tenderness. Loosen the soil around the roots before gently lifting them.
