Description
Fenugreek, also known as Methi, is a fast-growing leafy herb used both for its flavorful leaves and seeds. The tender green leaves are widely used in South Asian, Middle Eastern, and Mediterranean cuisine. Rich in iron, fiber, and antioxidants, fenugreek is also known for its digestive and anti-inflammatory benefits. It grows quickly, requires minimal care, and is ideal for kitchen gardens in the UAE’s cool season.
When to Plant in the UAE (Field Planting)
In the UAE, fenugreek should be sown directly outdoors from October to February when temperatures range between 15°C and 28°C. This cool-weather crop thrives in mild conditions and can be harvested in just 3–4 weeks. Avoid planting during hot months, as it may bolt or dry out quickly.
Tips for Planting
Choose a site with full sun or partial shade
Use loose, well-draining soil enriched with compost
Sow seeds directly in shallow rows (0.5–1 cm deep)
Space seeds about 2–3 cm apart, rows 15–20 cm apart
Water gently and keep soil moist but not soggy
You can begin harvesting young leaves in 20–25 days
For seed harvest, allow plants to fully mature (about 90–100 days)
Suitable for container gardening and raised beds
