Description
German Chamomile is a classic heirloom herb prized for its delicate daisy-like flowers, sweet apple-like fragrance, and soothing properties. The fragrant flowers are widely used to make herbal teas, natural skincare products, essential oils, and dried flower arrangements. This fast-growing annual also attracts bees and other beneficial pollinators, making it an excellent companion plant for the garden. It performs exceptionally well during the UAE’s cool growing season.
When to Plant in the UAE
- Outdoors: Direct sow seeds from October through February, when temperatures are cool.
Planting & Care Tips
- Light & Soil: Grow in full sun to partial shade in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with organic matter.
- Depth & Germination: Sow seeds on the soil surface or lightly press them into the soil without covering, as they require light to germinate. Germination typically occurs within 7–14 days.
- Spacing: Space plants 20–30 cm apart, with 30–40 cm between rows.
- Watering: Keep the soil lightly moist during germination and establishment. Once established, water regularly while allowing the soil surface to dry slightly between waterings.
- Feeding: Apply compost before planting. Chamomile requires very little additional fertilizer and grows best in moderately fertile soil.
- Harvest: Flowers are ready to harvest approximately 60–80 days after sowing, once they are fully open.
- Harvesting Tips: Harvest flowers in the morning after the dew has dried. Dry them in a cool, shaded, well-ventilated place to preserve their fragrance and medicinal qualities.
