Description

German Johnson Tomato is a classic heirloom variety prized for its large, pinkish-red beefsteak fruits, rich flavor, and tender, juicy flesh. The fruits typically weigh 300–600 g and have a balanced sweet and tangy flavor with relatively few seeds. This vigorous, indeterminate variety is an excellent choice for slicing, sandwiches, salads, burgers, and fresh cooking, and performs particularly well during the UAE’s cooler growing season.

When to Plant in the UAE

  • Outdoors: Start seeds in August and transplant seedlings in early October, when temperatures begin to cool.

Planting & Care Tips

  • Light & Soil: Plant in full sun in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost.
  • Depth & Germination: Sow seeds 0.5 cm deep. Germination typically occurs within 5–10 days in warm soil.
  • Spacing: Space plants 60–75 cm apart, with 90–120 cm between rows.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during flowering and fruit development, while avoiding waterlogged conditions.
  • Feeding: Apply compost before planting and feed with a balanced tomato fertilizer every 2–3 weeks. Increase potassium during flowering and fruiting to support strong fruit development.
  • Support: Provide strong stakes, cages, or trellises, as the indeterminate vines can grow vigorously and become heavy with large fruits.
  • Harvest: Fruits are typically ready approximately 75–90 days after transplanting, when they develop their characteristic pink-red color and become slightly soft.
  • Harvesting Tips: Harvest fruits regularly using clean pruners or gently twist ripe tomatoes from the vine. Allow them to fully ripen on the plant for the best flavor.
