Description

Birdhouse Gourd is a vigorous heirloom climbing gourd variety grown for its distinctive bottle-shaped fruits and strong, long vines. The mature gourds develop a hard outer shell that can be dried and crafted into natural birdhouses, nesting boxes, decorative pieces, containers, and traditional crafts. Young fruits can also be harvested and cooked like other gourds. This heat-loving, vigorous plant is well suited to the UAE and performs best when planted as temperatures begin to moderate after summer.

When to Plant in the UAE

  • Outdoors: Direct sow seeds in September.
  • Avoid planting during the peak summer heat, as extreme temperatures can reduce germination and stress young plants.

Planting & Care Tips

  • Light & Soil: Grow in full sun in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost and organic matter.
  • Depth & Germination: Soak seeds in warm water for several hours before sowing if desired. Sow seeds 2–3 cm deep. Germination typically occurs within 5–10 days.
  • Spacing: Space plants 90–120 cm apart, with 150–200 cm between rows.
  • Support: Provide a very strong trellis, pergola, or sturdy frame. The vigorous vines can become large and heavy, especially when carrying mature gourds.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist during active growth and fruit development. Avoid prolonged dry periods and waterlogged conditions.
  • Feeding: Add compost before planting and feed with a balanced organic fertilizer every 3–4 weeks during active growth.
  • Pollination: Encourage bees and other pollinators by growing flowering plants nearby. Hand-pollination can be useful when natural pollination is limited.
  • Harvest: For edible use, harvest young gourds while they are still tender. For birdhouses and crafts, leave fruits on the vine until fully mature and the outer shell becomes hard.
  • Drying: After harvesting mature gourds, allow them to dry in a warm, dry, well-ventilated location. Complete drying can take several months. A fully dried gourd should feel light and have hard, dry skin before crafting.
