Description
Long Pod Perkins Okra is a classic heirloom variety prized for its vigorous growth, high productivity, and long, slender green pods. The tender pods can reach 15–20 cm in length and have a rich, traditional okra flavor, making them excellent for frying, stews, soups, curries, gumbo, and pickling. This heat-loving variety thrives in warm weather and performs exceptionally well in the UAE when grown during the warmer growing periods.
When to Plant in the UAE
- Outdoors: Direct sow seeds in early September and again in early March for the best results.
Planting & Care Tips
- Light & Soil: Plant in full sun in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost.
- Depth & Germination: Sow seeds 2–3 cm deep. Germination typically occurs within 5–10 days in warm soil.
- Spacing: Space plants 30–45 cm apart, with 60–90 cm between rows.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist during establishment and flowering, then water deeply as needed during pod development.
- Feeding: Apply compost before planting and feed with a balanced fertilizer every 3–4 weeks during active growth. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage leaves at the expense of pods.
- Harvest: Pods are typically ready to harvest approximately 55–65 days after sowing. Pick when pods are young and tender, ideally around 7–10 cm long for the best texture.
- Harvesting Tips: Harvest pods every 1–2 days once production begins. Use clean scissors or a knife, as mature okra pods quickly become tough and fibrous.
