Description
Description
Maximilian Sunflower is a striking perennial heirloom sunflower prized for its tall, branching growth and abundant bright yellow flowers. Unlike single-stem annual sunflowers, this variety produces multiple flower heads on branching stems, creating a beautiful display that can attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators. It is also an excellent choice for naturalized gardens, borders, wildlife areas, and pollinator gardens. Once established, Maximilian Sunflower is drought tolerant and well suited to the UAE’s warm growing conditions.
When to Plant in the UAE
- Outdoors: Direct sow seeds in early September and again in early March for the best results.
Planting & Care Tips
- Light & Soil: Plant in full sun in fertile, well-draining soil. Maximilian Sunflower can tolerate a range of soil types once established.
- Depth & Germination: Sow seeds 1–2 cm deep. Germination typically occurs within 7–14 days.
- Spacing: Space plants 60–90 cm apart, with 90–120 cm between rows.
- Watering: Keep the soil moderately moist during germination and establishment. Once established, water deeply but allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
- Feeding: Mix compost into the soil before planting. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage excessive leafy growth and weaker stems.
- Support: Plants can reach approximately 1.5–2.5 m tall and may benefit from staking or support, particularly in exposed locations.
- Flowering: Plants typically begin flowering once established and can produce numerous yellow blooms along their branching stems.
- Maintenance: Remove spent flowers to improve appearance and encourage continued flowering. Cut back old growth after the flowering season to encourage fresh growth.
