Description
Golden Detroit Beet is a beautiful heirloom variety prized for its smooth, round golden-orange roots, tender green tops, and mild, sweet flavor. The roots have a fine texture and retain their bright golden color when cooked, making them excellent for roasting, steaming, salads, soups, pickling, and fresh cooking. The edible young leaves can also be harvested and used like leafy greens. This productive cool-season crop performs particularly well in the UAE during the cooler growing months.
When to Plant in the UAE
- Outdoors: Direct sow seeds from early October through February.
Planting & Care Tips
- Light & Soil: Grow in full sun to partial shade in loose, fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost. Remove stones and hard clumps to encourage smooth, well-shaped roots.
- Depth & Germination: Sow seeds 1–2 cm deep. Germination typically occurs within 5–10 days.
- Spacing: Thin seedlings to 8–10 cm apart, with 30–40 cm between rows.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during root development, while avoiding waterlogged conditions. Irregular watering can lead to uneven root growth.
- Feeding: Add compost before planting. Avoid excessive nitrogen, as it can encourage large leafy tops at the expense of root development.
- Harvest: Roots are typically ready approximately 50–65 days after sowing, when they reach around 5–8 cm in diameter.
- Harvesting Tips: Harvest smaller roots for the most tender texture and sweetest flavor. Loosen the soil and gently lift the roots rather than pulling forcefully. Young leaves can be harvested separately while leaving the growing point intact.
