Description

New Zealand Spinach (Tetragonia tetragonioides) is a vigorous, heat-tolerant leafy green with thick, succulent leaves and tender growing tips. Despite its name, it is not a true spinach, but it can be used in much the same way. The leaves have a mild, fresh flavor and are excellent in salads when young or cooked in soups, stews, sautés, pasta and other dishes.

Unlike traditional spinach, New Zealand Spinach performs well in warm weather and can provide a steady supply of greens when regular spinach struggles with heat. Its spreading growth habit makes it particularly useful for larger garden beds and containers.

Planting & Care Tips

  • Soak seeds in water for 12–24 hours before sowing to encourage faster germination.
  • Sow seeds about 1–2 cm deep in fertile, well-drained soil.
  • Germination usually takes around 10–21 days.
  • Space plants approximately 30–45 cm apart.
  • Grow in full sun to partial shade.
  • Keep the soil consistently moist during establishment.
  • Add compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.
  • Harvest the young leaves and tender growing tips regularly.
  • Regular harvesting encourages branching and continued production.
  • Provide sufficient space for the plant to spread as it matures.
