Description

Charleston Wakefield Cabbage is a classic heirloom variety prized for its large, elongated, pointed heads, crisp leaves, and sweet, mild flavor. The tightly formed heads are tender and versatile, making them excellent for fresh salads, coleslaw, wraps, stir-fries, soups, and cooking. This productive cool-season variety is well suited to the UAE’s winter growing season.

When to Plant in the UAE

  • Indoors: Start seeds in late September.
  • Outdoors: Transplant seedlings in late October.

Planting & Care Tips

  • Light & Soil: Grow in full sun in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost and organic matter.
  • Depth & Germination: Sow seeds 0.5–1 cm deep. Germination typically occurs within 5–10 days.
  • Spacing: Space plants 45–60 cm apart, with 60–75 cm between rows.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially while the heads are forming. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely or become waterlogged.
  • Feeding: Add compost before planting and feed with a balanced vegetable fertilizer every 3–4 weeks during active growth.
  • Harvest: Heads are typically ready approximately 70–90 days after transplanting, when they feel firm and well formed.
  • Harvesting Tips: Cut the head at the base with a sharp knife when it is firm and before it becomes over-mature. Leave the outer leaves and root area in place to encourage possible side shoots.
