Description

Cucuzzi Squash is a productive heirloom variety known for its extremely long, slender, light-green fruits and vigorous climbing vines. The fruits can grow several feet long, but are best harvested young when they are tender and mild in flavor. Cucuzzi has a firm, smooth texture and is excellent for sautéing, grilling, frying, soups, stews, pasta dishes, and Mediterranean-style cooking. The vigorous vines also produce attractive white flowers and require strong support to grow well.

When to Plant in the UAE

  • Outdoors: Direct sow seeds in early September and again in early March for the best results.

Planting & Care Tips

  • Light & Soil: Plant in full sun in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost and organic matter.
  • Depth & Germination: Sow seeds 2–3 cm deep. Germination typically occurs within 5–10 days in warm soil.
  • Spacing: Space plants 60–90 cm apart, with 120–180 cm between rows.
  • Support: Provide a strong trellis or sturdy climbing structure at least 1.8–2 m tall. The vigorous vines can spread extensively.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during flowering and fruit development, while avoiding waterlogged conditions.
  • Feeding: Apply compost before planting and feed with a balanced vegetable fertilizer every 3–4 weeks during active growth.
  • Harvest: Young fruits can be harvested approximately 60–80 days after sowing, preferably when they are tender and around 30–60 cm long.
  • Harvesting Tips: Harvest regularly while fruits are young and tender. Use a sharp knife or pruners to cut the fruit from the vine without damaging the plant.
