Description
French Thyme is a classic culinary herb known for its delicate aroma and earthy, slightly minty flavor. It’s a must-have in Mediterranean and French cuisine, perfect for seasoning meats, vegetables, soups, and sauces. A hardy, low-growing perennial, thyme thrives in sunny, well-drained areas and is ideal for container gardens, borders, or herb beds in the UAE’s winter season.
When to Plant in the UAE (Field Planting)
In the UAE, French Thyme should be sown outdoors in early October, when temperatures begin to cool and the risk of extreme heat has passed. This allows thyme to establish strong roots during the mild season and continue thriving through winter and spring. Thyme prefers daytime temperatures between 20°C and 29°C.
Tips for Planting
Choose a site with full sun and well-draining, sandy or rocky soil
Can be sown directly outdoors or started in seed trays and transplanted after 4–6 weeks
Sow seeds lightly on the surface and press gently – thyme needs light to germinate
Keep the soil lightly moist until germination (may take 10–21 days)
Space plants 20–25 cm apart
Water sparingly after establishment – thyme is drought-tolerant
Harvest leaves as needed once the plant is bushy – avoid cutting back more than 1/3 at a time
