Description

Red Shiso (Perilla frutescens var. crispa) is a distinctive Japanese herb known for its deep burgundy-red to purple leaves and aromatic flavor, with notes of mint, basil, citrus and mild spice. It is widely used in Japanese and East Asian cuisine, particularly with sushi, pickled plums, noodles, salads, rice dishes and garnishes. The colorful foliage also makes it an attractive addition to herb gardens, borders and containers.

Red Shiso is a warm-season annual that grows into an upright, bushy plant. Regular harvesting encourages fresh leaf growth, while allowing some plants to flower can provide a valuable food source for pollinators.

When to Plant in the UAE

  • Grow in full sun to partial shade.
  • Keep the soil consistently moist during germination and establishment.
  • Pinch growing tips regularly to encourage bushier growth.
  • Harvest young leaves regularly for the best texture and flavor.
