Description

Red Burgundy Okra is a striking heirloom variety prized for its deep burgundy-red pods, attractive plants, and tender, flavorful texture. The slender, ridged pods have a mild, slightly sweet flavor and can be enjoyed fresh or cooked in curries, stews, soups, stir-fries, frying, grilling, and pickling. The plants also produce attractive yellow flowers with dark centers, making them both productive and ornamental. This heat-loving crop performs particularly well in the UAE during the warmer growing season.

When to Plant in the UAE

  • Early September: Direct sow seeds outdoors as temperatures begin to moderate after the summer heat.
  • Early March: Direct sow seeds outdoors for the spring growing season.
  • Avoid: Peak winter periods when temperatures are too cool, as okra prefers warm soil and warm growing conditions.

Planting & Care Tips

  • Light & Soil: Grow in full sun in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost and organic matter.
  • Depth & Germination: Sow seeds 2–3 cm deep. Soaking seeds in warm water for several hours before planting can help improve germination. Germination typically occurs within 5–10 days in warm soil.
  • Spacing: Space plants 30–45 cm apart, with 60–90 cm between rows.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist during germination and early growth. Once established, water deeply and regularly, especially during flowering and pod development.
  • Feeding: Add compost before planting and feed with a balanced organic fertilizer every 3–4 weeks during active growth. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage leafy growth at the expense of pods.
  • Support: Plants can become tall and may benefit from light staking in exposed or windy locations.
  • Harvest: Pods are typically ready approximately 55–65 days after sowing. Harvest when pods are young, tender, and around 7–10 cm long.
  • Harvesting Tips: Pick pods every 1–2 days once production begins. Regular harvesting encourages the plant to continue producing new pods. Use gloves if the pods cause skin irritation.
