Description
San Marzano Tomato is a classic Italian heirloom variety renowned for its elongated, deep red fruits, meaty texture, low seed content, and rich, balanced flavor. The plum-shaped tomatoes typically grow 10–15 cm long and are especially prized for making sauces, passata, pasta dishes, pizza, and canning. This vigorous, high-yielding indeterminate variety produces abundant fruit throughout the season and performs exceptionally well during the UAE’s cooler growing months.
When to Plant in the UAE
- Indoors: Start seeds indoors in August.
- Outdoors: Transplant seedlings in early October, when temperatures begin to cool.
Planting & Care Tips
- Light & Soil: Plant in full sun in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost.
- Depth & Germination: Sow seeds 0.5 cm deep. Germination typically occurs within 5–10 days in warm soil.
- Spacing: Space plants 60–75 cm apart, with 90–120 cm between rows.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during flowering and fruit development, while avoiding waterlogged conditions.
- Feeding: Apply compost before planting and feed with a balanced tomato fertilizer every 2–3 weeks. Increase potassium during flowering and fruiting to encourage abundant production.
- Harvest: Fruits are ready to harvest approximately 75–90 days after transplanting, when they develop their characteristic deep red color and become slightly soft.
- Harvesting Tips: Harvest regularly using clean pruners or gently twist ripe fruits from the vine. Provide sturdy stakes or cages to support the vigorous indeterminate plants.
