Description
Description
Jersey Devil Tomato is a striking heirloom variety prized for its large, elongated, pepper-shaped fruits, vibrant red color, meaty flesh, and rich, sweet flavor. The fruits typically grow 10–15 cm long and are excellent for sauces, pastes, roasting, sandwiches, salads, and fresh cooking. With relatively few seeds and plenty of firm flesh, this vigorous indeterminate variety is especially useful for cooking while still being delicious fresh. It performs particularly well during the UAE’s cooler growing season.
When to Plant in the UAE
- Outdoors: Start seeds in August and transplant seedlings in early October, when temperatures begin to cool.
Planting & Care Tips
- Light & Soil: Plant in full sun in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost.
- Depth & Germination: Sow seeds 0.5 cm deep. Germination typically occurs within 5–10 days in warm soil.
- Spacing: Space plants 60–75 cm apart, with 90–120 cm between rows.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during flowering and fruit development, while avoiding waterlogged conditions.
- Feeding: Apply compost before planting and feed with a balanced tomato fertilizer every 2–3 weeks. Increase potassium during flowering and fruiting to support strong fruit development.
- Support: Provide sturdy stakes, cages, or trellises, as the vigorous indeterminate vines can become heavy with fruit.
- Harvest: Fruits are typically ready approximately 75–90 days after transplanting, when they develop a deep red color and begin to soften slightly.
- Harvesting Tips: Harvest fruits regularly using clean pruners or gently twist ripe tomatoes from the vine. Allow fully ripe fruits to develop their best flavor.
