Description

Lemon Drop, also known as Ají Limón, is a fiery chili from Peru (Capsicum baccatum) famed for its vivid yellow, citrus-flavored pods, offering a clean yet potent heat—approximately 15,000–50,000 Scoville units. Plants can be highly productive, often yielding dozens of slender, tapered fruits per bushy, well-branched plant.

When to Plant in the UAE (Field Timing)

StageUAE TimingSoil Temperature Notes
Start IndoorsMid‑JulySoil ≥ 24 °C
Transplant OutdoorsMid‑OctoberNight temp ≥ 15–18 °C
  • Indoor Sowing: Begin seeds around mid‑July, about 8–10 weeks before suitable outdoor conditions. Soil warmth should be at least 24 °C for optimal germination.

  • Outdoor Transplanting: Move to the garden by mid‑October, once night temperatures consistently remain above 13 °C and the risk of high summer heat has passed.

This schedule avoids extreme summer heat and takes advantage of the UAE’s mild early winter for strong establishment and fruiting.

Tips for Planting & Care

  • Lighting & Soil: Provide full sun and well-draining, fertile soil. For indoor starts, use a quality seed starting mix and consider a heat mat if needed .

  • Depth & Spacing: Sow seeds 0.6 cm deep. Transplant with spacing of 35–45 cm between plants and 60–90 cm between rows.

  • Watering: Keep soil evenly moist, especially during flowering and fruit set—but avoid waterlogging.

  • Fertilizer: Use a balanced fertilizer; lean toward higher phosphorus and potassium after the initial growth phase to support flowering and fruit development.

  • Growing Season: Expect a long season—about 100 days from transplanting to full ripeness.

  • Harvest: Fruits begin yellowing and matures approximately 80 days after flowering. Gently twist or cut to harvest
