Product Summary

Black Spanish Radish (Raphanus sativus) is a distinctive heirloom winter radish dating back centuries. It produces large, round to turnip-shaped roots with a striking deep-black skin and crisp, pure-white flesh. The flavor is noticeably peppery and pungent, making it excellent for fresh salads, sandwiches, roasting, pickling, and grating. This variety is also valued for its good storage ability.

Description

Black Spanish Radish is a unique addition to the cool-season garden. Its dark exterior contrasts beautifully with its bright white interior, while the firm, crisp texture gives it a strong, spicy character.

The roots typically reach around 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) in diameter and mature in approximately 55–70 days, depending on growing conditions. Unlike small spring radishes, Black Spanish is particularly well suited to cooler weather and can be harvested when young for a milder texture or allowed to reach full size for a stronger flavor.

It is an open-pollinated heirloom variety and grows best when temperatures are cool. The roots can also be stored for an extended period under suitable conditions.

When to Plant in the UAE

Direct sow: October–November

Black Spanish Radish is best grown in the UAE during the cooler part of the season. Sow directly into the garden or containers once temperatures begin to drop.

Planting & Care Tips

  • Light: Full sun; partial shade can also work.
  • Sowing: Direct sow; radishes generally perform best when they are not transplanted.
  • Planting depth: About 1–1.5 cm.
  • Spacing: 8–10 cm between plants.
  • Rows: Leave around 20–30 cm between rows.
  • Germination: Usually around 5–10 days under suitable conditions.
  • Soil: Loose, fertile, well-draining soil free of large stones or compacted areas.
  • Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during root development.
  • Feeding: Use compost or a balanced vegetable fertilizer. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage leafy growth at the expense of roots.
  • Harvest: Harvest when roots reach approximately 8–10 cm, or earlier for a more tender texture.
  • Storage: Mature roots are well suited to cool storage and can remain crisp for an extended period.
