Description

Turkish Orange Eggplant is a distinctive heirloom eggplant variety originating from Turkey. The plants produce attractive, round fruits that begin green and gradually develop a beautiful bright orange color as they mature.

The fruits are relatively small compared with standard eggplants, making them ideal for individual portions and creative cooking. They have a rich flavor and firm texture, and can be enjoyed grilled, roasted, sautéed, stuffed, or incorporated into a variety of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern dishes.

Its unusual orange fruits also make Turkish Orange an excellent choice for gardeners who want an ornamental yet highly useful vegetable in the garden.

When to Plant in the UAE

  • Indoors: Start seeds indoors in August.
  • Outdoors: Transplant strong seedlings in October.
  • Start seeds in a protected environment during the UAE summer and transplant outdoors when temperatures become more suitable for eggplant growth.

Planting & Care Tips

  • Sunlight: Full sun, ideally 6–8 hours daily.
  • Soil: Rich, fertile, well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter.
  • Sowing depth: Approximately 0.5 cm deep.
  • Germination: Usually 7–14 days under warm conditions.
  • Spacing: 45–60 cm between plants.
  • Row spacing: 75–90 cm.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, particularly during flowering and fruit development, but avoid waterlogging.
  • Feeding: Add compost or well-aged organic matter before planting and feed regularly with a balanced vegetable fertilizer.
  • Support: Provide a stake or support if the plant becomes heavily loaded with fruit.
  • Pollination: Encourage pollination by gently shaking the flowers during flowering.
  • Harvest: For tender fruits, harvest when they have developed their characteristic orange color but before they become overly mature and seedy. Frequent harvesting encourages continued production.
