Description
Description
Large American Flag Leek is a classic heirloom variety prized for its thick, long white stems, blue-green leaves, and mild, sweet flavor. The tender stems are excellent for soups, stews, sauces, roasted dishes, quiches, and fresh cooking. This productive and cold-tolerant leek develops thick stems when grown in fertile, well-draining soil and performs exceptionally well during the UAE’s cooler growing season.
When to Plant in the UAE
- Outdoors: Direct sow seeds or transplant seedlings from September through November.
Planting & Care Tips
- Light & Soil: Grow in full sun in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost and organic matter.
- Depth & Germination: Sow seeds 0.5–1 cm deep. Germination typically occurs within 7–14 days.
- Spacing: Space plants 10–15 cm apart, with 30–40 cm between rows.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during active growth, while avoiding waterlogged conditions.
- Feeding: Apply compost before planting and feed with a balanced fertilizer every 3–4 weeks to encourage strong leaf and stem development.
- Blanching: Gradually mound soil around the base of the plants as they grow to cover the lower stems. This produces longer, tender white sections.
- Harvest: Leeks are typically ready to harvest approximately 100–120 days after transplanting, when the stems have reached the desired thickness.
- Harvesting Tips: Loosen the soil around the base and gently lift the entire plant. Harvest during the cooler part of the day for the best freshness.
