Description
Mammoth Red Rock Cabbage is a classic heirloom variety prized for its large, dense heads and vibrant deep purple-red leaves. The crisp, sweet flavor becomes even richer after cool weather, making it an excellent choice for fresh salads, coleslaw, stir-fries, braising, pickling, and fermentation. This vigorous, high-yielding variety performs exceptionally well during the UAE’s cool growing season.
When to Plant in the UAE
- Indoors: Start seeds indoors in September.
- Outdoors: Transplant seedlings or direct sow in late October, when temperatures have cooled.
Planting & Care Tips
- Light & Soil: Plant in full sun in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost.
- Depth & Germination: Sow seeds 0.5–1 cm deep. Germination typically occurs within 5–10 days.
- Spacing: Space plants 45–60 cm apart, with 60–75 cm between rows.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially while heads are developing, but avoid waterlogged conditions.
- Feeding: Apply compost before planting and feed with a balanced fertilizer every 3–4 weeks. Ensure adequate nitrogen during early growth for vigorous leaf development.
- Harvest: Harvest mature heads in approximately 80–100 days, when they feel firm and compact.
- Harvesting Tips: Cut heads at the base using a sharp knife. Leave the outer leaves and roots in place, as small secondary heads may develop.
