Description
Nasturtium Mixed Colors is a vibrant and easy-to-grow flowering mix that produces cheerful blooms in a beautiful range of red, orange, yellow, cream, and gold shades. The plants feature attractive rounded leaves and a spreading or trailing growth habit, making them ideal for flower beds, borders, raised beds, containers, hanging baskets, and vegetable gardens. Both the flowers and young leaves are edible and have a pleasantly peppery flavor, making them excellent for salads, sandwiches, garnishes, and decorative dishes. The colorful flowers also attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators.
When to Plant in the UAE
- Outdoors: Direct sow seeds throughout October.
- Best results: Plant during the cooler growing season in a sunny location with well-draining soil.
- Avoid: Peak summer heat, as extreme temperatures can reduce germination, stress young plants, and limit flowering.
Planting & Care Tips
- Light & Soil: Grow in full sun to partial shade in fertile, well-draining soil. Nasturtiums can tolerate moderately poor soil.
- Depth & Germination: Soak seeds in water for several hours before planting to help soften the seed coat. Sow approximately 1–2 cm deep. Germination typically occurs within 7–14 days.
- Spacing: Space plants approximately 20–30 cm apart. Allow additional room for trailing plants to spread.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist during germination and early growth. Once established, water moderately and allow the soil surface to dry slightly between watering.
- Feeding: Add compost before planting if needed. Avoid excessive fertilizer, especially high-nitrogen fertilizer, as it can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers.
- Flowering: Plants generally begin flowering approximately 50–70 days after sowing, depending on growing conditions.
- Support: Allow trailing varieties to cascade from containers and hanging baskets or guide them along low supports.
- Harvesting: Harvest young leaves and fully opened flowers as needed. Use them fresh for the best flavor and appearance.
- Pollinators: The bright flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects.
