Description
Description
Royal Carpet Alyssum is a compact, low-growing flowering plant known for producing masses of small, fragrant flowers in rich shades of purple, violet, and lavender. The flowers form a dense carpet of color and release a sweet fragrance, making this variety excellent for borders, flower beds, containers, rock gardens, pathways, and pollinator-friendly spaces. Its spreading growth habit makes it especially useful as a ground cover or edging plant. Royal Carpet Alyssum performs best during the cooler growing season in the UAE.
When to Plant in the UAE
- Outdoors: Direct sow seeds in early September.
- Avoid: Peak summer heat, as extreme temperatures can reduce germination, plant establishment, and flowering.
Planting & Care Tips
- Light & Soil: Grow in full sun to partial shade in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost and organic matter.
- Depth & Germination: Sow seeds on the soil surface or cover very lightly with approximately 0.2–0.5 cm of soil. Germination typically occurs within 5–10 days.
- Spacing: Space plants approximately 15–20 cm apart to allow the spreading plants to form a dense carpet.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist during germination and early growth. Once established, water regularly while allowing the soil surface to dry slightly between watering.
- Feeding: Add compost before planting and use a light, balanced organic fertilizer if needed. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage foliage rather than flowers.
- Flowering: Plants can begin flowering approximately 40–60 days after sowing under suitable conditions.
- Maintenance: Trim plants lightly after a major flush of flowering to encourage fresh growth and additional blooms.
- Pollinators: The fragrant flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects.
