Description

Howden Pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo) is a classic American pumpkin variety known for its large, round, bright orange fruits and strong, sturdy stems. It is widely recognized as a traditional jack-o’-lantern pumpkin, producing attractive fruits with a smooth, deeply colored skin.

The fruits have firm orange flesh and are also suitable for cooking, including roasting, soups, purées and baking. The vigorous plants produce long vines and require plenty of growing space.

Planting & Care Tips

• Sow seeds directly about 2–3 cm deep in fertile, well-drained soil.
• Germination usually takes around 5–10 days in warm conditions.
• Space plants approximately 90–120 cm apart, allowing additional room for trailing vines.
• Grow in full sun.
• Enrich the soil with compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.
• Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during flowering and fruit development.
• Feed regularly with a balanced vegetable fertilizer, with additional potassium during fruiting.
• Allow vines to spread naturally or guide them along the edge of growing beds.
• Place developing pumpkins on mulch or a dry surface to keep them off wet soil.
• Harvest when fruits reach their mature orange color and the stem begins to dry and harden.
