Description

Borage is a beautiful heirloom herb prized for its vibrant blue star-shaped flowers, fuzzy edible leaves, and refreshing cucumber-like flavor. It is an excellent companion plant that attracts bees and other beneficial pollinators while helping improve biodiversity in the garden. The young leaves and flowers are edible and are commonly used in salads, herbal teas, garnishes, and refreshing summer drinks. This fast-growing annual thrives during the UAE’s cool growing season.

When to Plant in the UAE

  • Outdoors: Direct sow seeds from October through February, when temperatures are cool.
  • Successive Planting: Sow every 3–4 weeks throughout the season for continuous blooms and harvests.

Planting & Care Tips

  • Light & Soil: Grow in full sun to partial shade in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with organic matter.
  • Depth & Germination: Sow seeds 1–2 cm deep. Germination typically occurs within 7–14 days.
  • Spacing: Space plants 30–45 cm apart, with 45–60 cm between rows.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist during establishment, then water regularly while allowing the soil surface to dry slightly between waterings.
  • Feeding: Mix compost into the soil before planting. Borage requires very little additional fertilizer once established.
  • Harvest: Young leaves can be harvested in approximately 40–50 days, while flowers begin blooming around 50–70 days after sowing.
  • Harvesting Tips: Harvest young leaves before they become coarse, and pick flowers regularly to encourage continued blooming and attract more pollinators.
