Description
Broccoli is a cool-season crop rich in vitamins C and K, antioxidants, and fiber. It produces a large, tightly packed green head surrounded by nutritious leaves and tender stalks. A staple in healthy kitchens, broccoli is excellent steamed, stir-fried, or roasted. It thrives in cooler weather and performs best in the UAE during the winter growing season.
When to Plant in the UAE (Transplanting Method)
In the UAE, broccoli should be sown indoors in seed trays in September, then transplanted outdoors in mid to late October once temperatures begin to cool. This gives the plant time to develop strong roots and ensures healthy growth through the cooler months. Avoid sowing directly in the field during high heat or summer humidity.
Tips for Planting
Start seeds in trays with light, well-draining seed-starting mix
After 4–6 weeks, transplant seedlings to outdoor beds
Choose a spot with full sun and rich, well-draining soil
Space plants 35–45 cm apart, with 50–60 cm between rows
Keep soil consistently moist, especially during head formation
Add mulch to retain moisture and keep roots cool
Harvest when the central head is tight and fully formed, usually 60–80 days from sowing
